The roundtable will explore Investment & Export Opportunities for Food and Agro-forestry Products from Nigeria.
New trends in consumer health, nutrition and consumption behavior in the United States, Asia and Europe has led to the emergence of a huge export market for food and agroforestry products from Africa.
Over $30 million worth of yams was exported from Ghana to the US alone in 2008. The Chinese market for white yams is estimated at over 3 million tons per annum.
Afromomum melegueta (African Grains of Paradise) is a major spice used in the brewing of a popular US beer.
Alanblackia seeds native to southern Nigeria has emerged as a major new alternative in the production of margarines and fat free oils.
Processed products from the ‘Bush Mango’ (‘Ogbono’) seeds are being sold in the US as a blockbuster weight loss drug or drink.
The US market alone for these products is in excess of $1 billion per annum.
It is against this background that BIOTRADE Global Agency Ltd in association with Bioresources Development and Conservation Programme (BDCP) is organizing a BioTrade Roundtable for all commissioners of Agriculture and Commerce to assist state governments and private investors to successfully develop an export market for food and agro-forestry products in the US and Asian markets.
The roundtable is part of our BIOTRADE Initiative that seeks to enhance the capability of Nigeria to produce value-added food and agro-forestry products and services for both domestic and international markets.
This will create new sources of wealth and lead to massive generation of direct and indirect job opportunities for producers, processors as well as in packaging.
